Giving up a career and stepping into the unknown can be a daunting experience. However, personalised support from Global Connection continually empowers expat partners to thrive in a new setting.
‘It’s strange not working’
“Before we left Sweden, I pretty much had my dream job. What would I do as an expat? I really didn’t know. I was okay with taking a step into the unknown but I definitely had my moments where I felt isolated and lost. When you are so used to having a career, it can feel strange when you’re not working,” says Julia, who is now living in the Netherlands. “Of course, whenever we have relocated, taking care of my children has always been an immediate priority (and that’s a role, which gives me a great sense of contentment) but I also wanted to continue with my own career.”
‘Focus on me!’
“The partner support I received from my husband’s company via Global Connection has definitely been instrumental in terms of me regaining a sense of direction and finding meaning and purpose,” says Julia. “Even speaking to my Global Connection consultant, who made me aware of what support I had available, gave me lift. It made me realise that it’s okay to focus on me and my needs. That empowered me and motivated me to find ways to learn and grow. I also realised that I now had the time and space for further education and professional training. Since becoming an expat partner, I have taken several courses related to my career. I’m also now a certified coach.”
Energised and excited!
“Honestly, I still have my moments of doubt and there are times when feelings of isolation creep back. But I’m very grateful for the support that I have received. It really unlocked new possibilities for me. Something that I have learned from talking to a coach (and also from training to become a coach) is that the answers are within you. The coach helps to put a flashlight on your passions and gets you to listen to your own ideas. And when you realise what’s possible, you start to feel energised and excited for the future!”
