Don’t forget to give yourself time and space to adjust

“When we moved to Ireland, I didn’t anticipate some of the challenges to come – I had many plans and expectations,” says expat partner Rowena Govender.

Bubble of optimism

“An international relocation was a dream come true for us. I was planning to do an MBA part-time whilst continuing my career in the city of Cork,” says Rowena, a highly experienced supply chain professional from South Africa. “Looking back, I would say that I was in a ‘bubble of optimism’ when I first arrived! I underestimated how long it would take to get settled, especially with a busy one-year-old on my hands!”

Feeling disconnected

“My first lesson was the importance of location. We found a picturesque and peaceful home outside the city; however we were completely disconnected from everything else. I was so used to the fast pace of Johannesburg that I felt isolated in the Irish countryside amidst the cows,” says Rowena. “The school application process was another eye-opener. Joining Facebook community groups helped me get plenty of information and I would recommend this prior to a move. I was on almost every school’s waiting list in the county with my wait anticipated to be a year or two, due to the schooling crisis, which forced me to reconsider my plans and expectations.”

Much-needed perspective

“I spoke to Jasmin, my Global Connection consultant. She was incredibly supportive and shared some articles about other expat partners, which helped me to see that what I was experiencing was totally normal. I wasn’t failing – I just needed to reset my outlook. With new clarity, we searched for a new home and found a great place in the city centre. This transformed my mindset as our life became more convenient and social. We also hired a full-time au pair, which has allowed me to pursue my plans.”

Finding our rhythm

“Now, I can say that we’ve found our rhythm. I’ve submitted my final MBA presentation and started a contract role that gives me flexibility to be present with my family whilst pursuing my career. The relocation experience has taught me so much about myself. If we move again, I’ll keep my optimism – but I’ll try not to over plan or have too many expectations. I realise now that giving myself time and being open to the uncertainty makes all the difference.”
