Rising tuition fees for international education is a challenge for both expat families and HR professionals.
Challenge for HR
One significant change to expatriate contracts in recent years is that less employers are paying for kids’ schooling overseas. As a result, the expense of international schools is a challenge for HR professionals trying to get talent to move abroad – and to retain them.
Struggle for families
Rising tuition fees and higher competition at international schools with locals have forced outbound families to look for other options, such as state schools and homeschooling. Still, most families are seeking more affordable international schooling.
New trends in education
Karlijn Jacobs, senior educational consultant at Edufax, has noticed new trends in public education in many countries with more of a focus on preparing students for globalisation. At the same time access to public education for foreign students is getting easier. There is also an increased focus on quality control in international education that allows families to compare the balance between quality and tuition fees of different schools. This is a welcome development for families and global mobility.
