After 14 years in Australia, expat partner Yury Suturin was well settled: “I’m grateful for the support I have received since relocating to the UAE – it’s got me moving in the right direction.”
A new beginning
“My wife and I have two kids but they’re both grown up and studying at university, which made the decision to relocate easier for us. Still it was a big change for us coming to Dubai – the climate and the culture especially. Also, we were just so used to the Australian way of life, so it’s taken some time to adjust,” says Yury, a finance professional with over two decades of experience across energy, infrastructure, consulting, and government sectors.
Personalised support
“The job market here is also quite different to Australia, so I was very happy to receive personalised support from the expatriating company via Global Connection. It was the first time I had this kind of service and I was very impressed. I first spoke to Ines, a consultant at Global Connection. She was very knowledgeable and welcoming – I felt like we’d known each other before. She then introduced me to a fantastic and very capable coach, who is very inspiring…”
Regained momentum
“After the coaching sessions I always felt very positive, motivated and ready to tackle other challenges. Like me, my coach is a native Russian speaker. She understood my issues extremely well, took her time to listen to everything about my situation and her feedback was very valuable and comprehensive. The personalised support I received has definitely given me some momentum, so hopefully I will find an opportunity soon,” says Yury, who is also studying in Dubai.
Two-wheeled adventures
“I decided to take some courses in data science and Python, so day to day I have a nice balance. It’s good to have another focus besides my job search,” says Yury, a keen cyclist, too. “It was a nice surprise to discover there’s a special cycling route in Dubai. It’s called the ‘Al Qudra’ track. One section runs in parallel with the highway but it’s a designated path just for cyclists so it’s very safe. Obviously the heat in Dubai is gruelling, especially in summer months, so if you want to cycle for 150km here, it’s best to get up at sunrise! But the views of the desert in the early morning definitely make it worth your while.”
