Whenever we have been asked to disclose our ‘job search success rate’, we have responded that such a statistic is of no value, not just for the assigning company but also for the partners they wish to support.
Earth’s average temperature
Given that Global Connection works with thousands of partners at all stages of adult life and career levels across a wide range of industries, and representing 100 nationalities in over 140 countries, how could we possibly offer a single ‘job search success rate’? It would be like telling someone the average temperature on earth, a statistic that would not help anyone prepare for the climate in a specific location. We support thousands of partners annually, and since 2013, 97.3% would recommend our services. This honest measure of success reflects our commitment to providing exceptional support that is tailored to each individual’s unique situation.
My personal experiences
Relocating to Singapore in the 1990s, I experienced what I know now are very typical challenges for expat partners. Thrust into an unfamiliar environment, I had no support network, so I felt isolated. I missed my old job and my old identity. I was completely unsure about what came next for me and my career. If I had been told that I had an 84% chance of getting a job, I would have wondered: What if I am one of the 16% who doesn’t get a job? Or what if I get offered a job but quickly realise it’s not one I want?
Reassuring the partner
That is why I am very proud of our personalised approach. With us, no one gets left behind. No matter what their professional background is, no matter where they now live, or where they are from, and no matter what languages they do, or don’t speak, we work with each and every partner to find them a fulfilling occupation, whatever suits them best.
Personal challenges
The partner may have to ‘change lanes’, or perhaps study or upskill, before finding a job. They might be forced to reconsider their priorities to better suit expat life, perhaps working part-time or volunteering. They may just need to buckle up for a long job search that requires patience and persistence. Our personalised approach also supports each individual partner to navigate a new culture, something everyone needs to do, and, if need be, address emotional challenges related to relocation.
Ultimate solution
So, while some providers boast about having high average ‘job search success rates’, I hope it’s clear why such ‘statistics’ are of no value. We will continue to measure our success with absolute integrity and complete transparency. As always, I am more than happy to share our results.
