Variety is the spice of expat life

A former speech therapist now living in Oxford, expat partner Sirka is making the most of her time now that she’s happily retired. “Honestly, I’ve never had such a busy schedule!”

An apprenticeship of sorts

“Initially, I considered trying to find work in the UK. But through the conversations that I had with Jasmin (my Global connection consultant) and later with a coach, I recognised that now was actually a good time to retire,” says Sirka, a native of East Frisia. “I basically decided to look at this as an apprenticeship for retirement in Germany!”

The volunteer barista

Although not  working felt a little strange at first, Sirka has found plenty of ways to keep active, stay fulfilled and make connections in Oxford: “I volunteer at a community cafe, just once a week but it’s a lovely way to meet people in our neighbourhood. Bonus (caffeinated) perk: I’m getting to practise my latte art!”

Wonderful networks, resources

“I’m also a member of the Women’s Institute in Oxfordshire. It’s a wonderful organisation that organises talks with experts, nature walks and more, and we regularly get together for tea and biscuits!” says Sirka. “For anyone moving to the UK, the National Trust is a fantastic resource. The website will give you plenty of ideas for day trips to heritage buildings, and for nature walks – I must say that the beauty of the English countryside is just lovely. The National Trust website also lists loads of cultural events, for example theatre shows, art exhibitions and open-air concerts, so you’re never short of things to do.”

Golf game right on course

In terms of her own leisure pursuits, Sirka has joined a local golf club: “I’m not an experienced golfer by any stretch but I love it. I have met some English women at the club, some of whom used to be expats which gives us some common ground. They’re much better golfers than me but they give me plenty of encouragement – I think my game is coming on!”

Goosebumps and gratitude!

“I’ve also joined a choir, which has been another lovely way to meet people. We performed at the New College Chapel, a gorgeous heritage building. I got goosebumps standing there,” says Sirka, who admits she didn’t think she would like being retired so much. “Honestly, I can’t thank Jasmin and my coach enough for helping me make the decision. Life has never been so full!”
